As you wander around your garden, the idea of putting a pond suddenly pops up in your periphery.  If you love to see a mini ecosystem in your own backyard, then a pond is the best addition to your garden.  The factors that lead to a successful garden pond need not be expensive.

To minimize the cost of material and of labor, you can create the pond yourself. Utilize the materials you have and you can gather rocks, gravel and wild plants in your vicinity.  You do not need exotic and one of a kind flora and fauna for your pond.  Do not use rocks that have been exposed to chemicals.  Chemicals can cause harm to the plants and living organisms that lives in your garden and soon to be built pond.

Other factors that lead to a successful garden pond are your location and climate.  The depth of your pond depends on your location.  If you live in a subtropical climate, you can have a shallow pond but if you live in colder areas wherein winter is long, dig a deeper pond.  The depth must be beyond the freezing point so as to let the organism to thrive even during winter.

Study the terrain of your garden.  Visualize the exact location of your pond. Decide whether you want to catch a glimpse of your pond while lounging inside your house or not.  Decide also if you want it to be the focal point of your garden.  These are also factors that lead to a successful garden pond

Choose plants and animals/fishes that are easy to maintain. Create a wildlife appeal on the vicinity surrounding your pond by putting in trees and shrubs that seems to grow on their own.  You can put sculptures and accents that can be used as conversation starters when you have visitors around.  Installing a waterfall in your pond can add drama to which is also a factor that lead to a successful garden pond. It also relaxes you when you lounge around in your garden and you hear the water flowing in the background.

If you put water lilies in your pond, make sure that your pond is exposed to the sun for 4-6 hours.  And if you want to raise koi fishes instead of the other types of fish you need to build a larger pond.  Koi grows more than those of the other type fishes.

Consider also the source of water for your pond, see to it does not contain chemicals that can harm the fishes and organisms living on it. To be sure on the quality of the water, let it sit for a few days before putting in the fishes.  Having uncontaminated water in your pond is also a factors that lead to a successful garden pond.

You need to line you pond with a material that prevents the leaching of water and to keep your pond from drying up.  It can either be an old inflatable swimming pool or any material that prevents water from passing through it.

These are just the basic factors that lead to a successful garden pond.  A pond is a work in progress and of trials and errors. The beauty of your pond and of the garden as a whole does not depend on what is installed there but on your constant ingenuity and industry.
