Enjoying your garden this summer

Summer is when you can sit back and enjoy all the effort and hard work that went into maintaining your garden during the harsh winter months and it is never too late to create your perfect summer garden. Summer is when your flowers are in full bloom and the grass is a soft green velvet carpet.

Adding to an existing garden or creating a summer garden from the beginning is not difficult regardless of your expertise. October through to November is considered the best time for planting summer flowering bulbs in order to avoid the winter frost.

It will pay in the long run to design and plan your summer flower garden on paper first. It will be far easier to reposition a plot on paper than in real terms! For handy hints and tips on what type of flowers will thrive in your garden take a look around at neighbouring houses and see what they have prospering, or choose your favourite flower from recent flower deliveries that you may have received.

Design complete, you will need to make soil preparations. Plants and shrubs sometimes need differing pH levels, but as a rule the best pH levels seem to be between pH6.5 and pH7.5.

Any time and hard work spent now will reap rewards later in summer when your garden is in flower. Weeding is best done over a few days. After initial weeding, wait and see if any return, weed again and so on until the area is clear. Flower deliveries are a wonderful gift but fresh flowers every day for your home are a real treat

Perhaps you are considering creating a quiet summer retreat area in your garden, somewhere to sit back, relax and enjoy all that your summer garden has to offer. This can easily be achieved with the addition of hanging baskets and containers. These will bring that extra burst of colour to your summer garden and there is no better time to plant these than in the early summer. One pertinent point to remember is that you will need to turn your containers on a daily basis in order to achieve a well balanced pot.

Summer is a great time for al fresco dining and you can easily create yourself an area that would be perfect for this purpose. Temporary decking is a good choice and can be laid over a lawned area. You will need to move the decking frequently in order to mow the lawn and avoid the grass dying.

If you love fresh flowers, both giving and receiving, consider growing yourself a cut flower garden. This will give you the opportunity to save some hard earned cash on those flower deliveries and give your own grown blooms.
