Split Bamboo Fencing – Unique Fencing

Submitted by Chris Station on March 23, 2011 – 12:25 pmNo Comment

Bamboo in general is a tough and long lasting fencing material. And split bamboo is no exception to this. Split bamboo fencing is used frequently in warmer, more temperate climates and is actually the preferred material in both tropical and desert regions.

Using split bamboo fencing will produce a fence that is striking in its appearance. But since it is split it does lose a bit of its durability. Solid bamboo can last upwards of twenty years. Split bamboo on the other hand may only stand up to the elements for about half this time.

Split bamboo fencing material is different from solid bamboo fencing material. Solid bamboo can be used as it’s grown, in one single piece. Split bamboo, though, comes from just the outer part of the bamboo shoots. Then the pieces are joined together using a galvanized type wire. Split bamboo usually comes in rolls suitable for fencing.

Manufacturers often use split bamboo when they make bamboo fencing panels.

This is how they’re made. When putting together a panel, split bamboo poles are connected together using 6 to 8 rows of different types of wire.

To ensure that the panels are solid, a heavy gauge wire, which is often galvanized, is used along both the top and the bottom of each panel. Middle rows will also have wire, usually some kind of rubber coated wire. This way the panels will maintain some flexibility when they are placed on the frame.

These split bamboo fencing panels are then attached to some wooden posts. When the posts have been placed into the ground you’ll have an almost instant fence.

One important thing to note is that you will need to use a frame attached to wooden posts that go into the ground. Bamboo doesn’t last long if placed in direct contact with the ground. If you’d like your fence to reach right to the ground, then simply frame in the bamboo panels using wooden boards going across the bottom of the fence.

Another option for using split bamboo fencing is tying it to a wall or existing fence. You can dress up a plain wall, or use it as a backdrop for a deck area. With an existing fence, it’s even easier.

Split bamboo works really well on a wooden fence because it lies flat against the fence boards. And it’s no problem to anchor it to the fence just by stapling it securely to the top, middle and bottom of the fence. Be sure to use stainless steel staples. That way you can avoid rust spoiling the appearance of your unique fencing. When the panels are too wide or long, you can cut them to fit.

When you’re applying rolled bamboo panels to chain link fencing, it’s a simple process. You can either wrap the rolled bamboo around the chain link fence or drape the panels over the top of the fence. Then attach your panels with some heavy-gauge but flexible steel wire that you tie equal distances apart.

Why not think about split bamboo fencing in order to create a truly unique look for your deck or backyard?
